What’s Really in an Aerosol Shaving Cream Can

Foam from a can is cream mixed with a liquefied gas. Barbasol’s Original Thick & Rich lists isobutane and propane among its eight ingredients, beside stearic acid, triethanolamine, sodium lauryl sulfate and fragrance, and its label warns: “Contents under pressure. Do not puncture or incinerate.” The gas turns the cream to foam as it leaves the nozzle, and it is why a used can needs care: the EPA counts leftover household products that can catch fire, react or explode as household hazardous waste, and, depending on your local agency, its examples include aerosol cans that aren’t empty. A can that still hisses when you press the nozzle isn’t empty.

So the lowest-waste move with a can you already own is to use it up rather than throw it out early, then replace it with a bar or a cream instead of another can.

Leaf Shave: a bar in a paper box

Leaf Shave sells its soap as two 1.5-ounce bars in packaging it calls “paper-based and curbside recyclable.” The Fragrance Free bar is a coconut, castor and cocoa butter soap with glycerin and kaolin clay and no added fragrance; the Fig, Spruce and Campfire Spice bars add fragrance. Leaf says the bar can be lathered in the hand and rubbed straight onto the skin, with a bowl and brush giving the best lather, so you don’t need to buy a brush to start.

A classic scented cream: Proraso Shaving Cream

If a bar sounds like too much fuss, Proraso’s Refreshing and Toning Shaving Cream is what Proraso calls its original shaving classic and its first line, made in Italy for everyday shavers, wet shavers and barbers alike. It is scented with eucalyptus oil and menthol plus added fragrance, so it isn’t fragrance-free. A pea- or dime-sized amount lathers with a brush or wet hands, and Proraso says one 5.2-ounce tube typically lasts three to six months with regular use. Proraso’s own pages don’t name the tube’s material, but The Razor Company, a US shaving retailer, lists it as an aluminum tube (Oct 2026).

Organic Soap Bars: EcoRoots and Badger

EcoRoots’ Organic Shaving Soap is a 3.5-ounce bar sold, in the maker’s words, “Package-Free” with “Plastic-Free Shipping.” It is a soap of organic sunflower, coconut, castor and safflower oils with cocoa butter, shea butter, avocado oil, coconut milk powder and bentonite clay, scented with lemon, lime, lavandin, eucalyptus and bergamot essential oils. EcoRoots makes it in the USA, calls it vegan and pitches it for shaving legs.

Badger’s Shave Bar, sold on Amazon as its Organic Shaving Soap Puck, is a 3.15-ounce bar in what Badger calls “plastic-free and recyclable packaging,” made with 85% organic ingredients. It is an organic palm and coconut oil soap with glycerin, shea butter and aloe, scented with bergamot, vetiver, sandalwood, cardamom and black pepper oils. Badger says its palm oil is certified both USDA organic and RSPO, and it recommends hot water and a shave brush for the lather.

Buy Once: the Puck, the Brush, and the Razor

A bar has nothing to dispense, so none of it is left stuck in a can or a tube at the end. The other half of a plastic-free shave is the razor: a metal safety razor handle is meant to be kept, and only the steel blade is replaced. A bar, a kept razor and a brush you replace when the bristles wear out make a routine with no cans, tubes or plastic cartridges to throw away.
