Steeping a plastic tea bag at brewing temperature releases about 11.6 billion microplastics and 3.1 billion nanoplastics into that cup, per a 2019 McGill study that traced the particles to the bag’s own nylon and PET mesh. A 2024 Barcelona study measured the same mechanism across three bag materials and found particle release from all of them, with measurable uptake in cultured human intestinal cells. Neither study claims a health outcome from drinking tea; both measured what a heated plastic mesh sheds into water. “Plastic-free” on a tea box is worth checking, not assuming — some “plant-based” bags are polylactic acid (PLA), a corn-derived plastic that composts only industrially. The one construction with no plastic to disclose is loose leaf tea in a steel infuser.

What the Microplastics Studies Found
The 2019 study, led by Laura Hernandez and Nathalie Tufenkji at McGill University and published in Environmental Science & Technology, steeped single mesh tea bags at 95°C and used electron microscopy to count what came out. Quoted directly from the paper: steeping released “approximately 11.6 billion microplastics and 3.1 billion nanoplastics into a single cup” of tea. Chemical analysis matched the particles to the bags’ own material — nylon and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the synthetic mesh used for see-through bags, not the paper bags most grocery-store tea comes in (DOI: 10.1021/acs.est.9b02540).
A 2024 study led by Gooya Banaei and colleagues at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, published in Chemosphere, compared three bag materials directly. Nanoparticle tracking put the release at roughly 1.20 × 10&sup9; particles per milliliter for polypropylene, 1.35 × 10&sup8; for cellulose, and 8.18 × 10&sup6; for nylon-6 — polypropylene released the most, nylon-6 the least. Cultured human intestinal cell models took up all three particle types. That’s cell-level uptake in a lab model, not a health outcome in a person who drinks tea, and this article doesn’t extend the finding past what was measured (DOI: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.143736).

Do Tea Bags Have Microplastics?
Only if the bag itself contains plastic. Nylon and PET mesh bags — sold so the leaves are visible — are plastic by construction, the exact material the McGill study measured. The 2024 Barcelona study measured cellulose bags releasing roughly an order of magnitude fewer particles per millilitre than polypropylene, but many paper bags still use a small amount of polypropylene as a heat-seal, a detail few boxes disclose. Loose leaf tea in a metal infuser has no bag material to shed at all.
What “Plastic-Free” Means on a Tea Bag
Four constructions are sold as tea bags, and “plastic-free” doesn’t mean the same thing between them. Paper with a polypropylene heat-seal is the most common construction on grocery-store bags: wood pulp and abaca fiber closed with a small amount of PP so the bag holds together without an added adhesive. Celestial Seasonings’ “pillow-style” bags need “no string, tag, staple or individual wrapper” — nothing to heat-seal in the first place. Twinings instead uses a fold-sealed bag with a cotton string, closed by folding rather than a plastic strip.
PLA mesh, marketed as “plant-based” or “non-GMO plant fiber,” is corn-starch-derived plastic — a real bioplastic, not a synonym for “no plastic.” It’s the material behind most silky pyramid bags marketed as biodegradable, and it needs the sustained heat of an industrial facility to break down on any practical timeline. Twinings says its UK bags “will break down within 6 months” in a council caddy but “may not compost as quickly” in garden compost, and its own target for home-compostable bags is 2035 — meaning they aren’t yet. “Compostable” without “home” very likely describes the industrial case, not yours.
Nylon or PET mesh pyramid bags are fully synthetic, sold for their see-through look — the exact material the McGill study tested, and it doesn’t compost in any home or municipal system. String-and-tag paper with no heat-seal, and loose leaf steeped without a bag at all, are the two constructions with nothing to disclose, because no plastic was added in the first place.

Are PLA Tea Bags Compostable at Home?
Usually not, even when the box says “compostable.” PLA needs the sustained heat of an industrial facility, plus controlled moisture, that a backyard pile rarely reaches. Twinings’ UK guidance says its bags break down in a council caddy in about six months but may not compost as fast in garden compost, and its target for home-compostable bags is 2035, not today. Read “compostable” as industrial unless a brand specifically says “home” or “backyard.”
What Tea Bags Are Made of Cotton or Paper Only?
Bags closed with a cotton string and a paper tag, sealed by folding rather than heat, come closest to a single-material paper bag — Twinings describes exactly this: fold-sealed, cotton string, a tag printed with biodegradable ink. Celestial Seasonings’ pillow-style bags skip the string and tag entirely. Neither maker calls these bags “plastic-free,” which is itself informative.
Tea Bag Materials, Brand by Brand
Every row below reflects the maker’s own page as it read on August 29, 2026; a blank in a maker’s own copy is marked “not disclosed” rather than filled in. Two brands stand out: Clipper pioneered a PLA-sealed “plastic-free” bag in 2018 but now says it retired that wording after 2020 regulatory guidance for “plant-based, biodegradable.” Bigelow is the only grocery brand stating “contain no plastic” outright; Pukka is the only one claiming certified home compostability.

Two rows are deliberate contrasts. Arbor Teas built a reputation on unbleached tea bags, but its catalog today sells loose leaf only. PG Tips’ standalone UK site is gone, folded into a Lipton portfolio page with no composition detail. Read the specific claim on the specific page, not a brand’s reputation from a few years ago.
Is Twinings Plastic-Free?
No — Twinings doesn’t use that phrase. Its packaging page calls its bags “plant-based, biodegradable, compostable” and fold-sealed with a cotton string, which isn’t the same claim. Its own stated goal is home-compostable bags by 2035 — language that only makes sense if they aren’t yet.
Is Tazo Tea Plastic-Free?
Tazo doesn’t say so directly either. Its FAQ page is titled “Are TAZO teabags made with plastic?” and the answer describes the bag’s abaca-and-wood-pulp composition without ever stating yes or no. Tazo does make an explicit home-compostable claim for the paper itself — a stronger disclosure than most brands here, just not phrased as “plastic-free.”
Does Lipton Have Microplastics?
Lipton’s own site doesn’t say. Its pyramid-bag pages describe the material only as “plant-based,” and its standard bagged lines — the ones most people buy — carry no composition claim on lipton.com at all. No compostable claim appears anywhere on the brand’s site checked today. That silence isn’t proof of plastic, but it isn’t the disclosure a shopper avoiding it would need either.
Finish the Box Before You Switch
If the box in your cupboard is a nylon-mesh brand or an unlabeled bag with no compostable claim, replacing it before it’s empty doesn’t undo anything. The particles a plastic bag sheds happen at steeping, not at purchase — a half-used box thrown out for a “plastic-free” brand just adds packaging waste for tea you’d have finished anyway. What matters is what you buy next. If you’re mid-box, finish it.
The Plastic-Free Baseline: Loose Leaf and a Steel Infuser
Every brand above is answering a question a steel infuser doesn’t have to. Loose leaf tea has no bag, no seal, and no compostable claim to qualify — nothing there to be plastic in the first place. An 18/8 stainless infuser, like the HOUSE AGAIN Tea Infuser, listed around $9 when this page was written, pays for itself against a $0.20–$0.45-per-bag habit within weeks and doesn’t wear out the way a gasket does. A sachet is more convenient for travel or a group, but for daily steeping at home, the infuser has the fewest disclosures to check.

What Happens to a Tea Bag After You Are Done
The bag material determines the bin, and the table shows how inconsistently that gets disclosed. A genuinely home-compostable bag — Pukka’s or Tazo’s claim — can go straight into a backyard pile. A bag labeled only “compostable” or “biodegradable,” without “home” in the sentence, is very likely industrial — Teapigs and Rishi say so directly. Nylon and PET mesh bags, and any bag with no compostable claim at all, belong in the trash, however natural the box looks.
Tags and staples complicate a compostable bag more than the material does. A metal staple has to be pulled first; a synthetic string undoes the point even if the bag breaks down. Traditional Medicinals and Numi both use cotton string and FSC or recycled-paper tags to keep the assembly compostable — and both still flag the outer wrapper as separate, industrial-only material. “The bag is compostable” and “everything I unwrapped is compostable” aren’t the same claim.
