Non-Toxic Slow Cooker: Which Crock Pots Are Lead-Free

A slow cooker is only as clean as the surface your food sits against for eight hours, and on most of them that surface is a glazed stoneware crock. Ceramic glazes can carry lead and cadmium, which is why the FDA sets leach limits for ceramic foodware and why Crock-Pot and Hamilton Beach now put a glaze statement in writing. If you would rather have no glaze to think about, two kinds of slow cooker skip it entirely: a bare stainless steel pot (an Instant Pot’s 18/8 inner pot, or 360 Cookware’s T-316 stainless stockpot on a heating base) and VitaClay’s unglazed clay insert. Where the Lead Concern Comes From

Almost every classic slow cooker has a glazed ceramic (stoneware) insert, and ceramic glazes historically have used lead to make a smooth, glassy finish. That history is why leachable lead in ceramic foodware is regulated at all, and why “is there lead in slow cookers” is a fair question. The problem is how the internet answered it.

Most of the viral numbers — the “70,000 ppm lead!” screenshots — come from XRF testing, and the biggest of them were not taken on the crock at all: Lead Safe Mama’s 70,400 ppm VitaClay reading came from the appliance’s enameled metal housing, a part that never touches food, while the clay pot itself read 57 to 71 ppm. An XRF gun detects whether an element is present in a material; it does not measure what migrates into food. That is useful for spotting hazards, but it is not the measurement that decides what ends up in your stew. The test that answers the real question is a leach test: soak the vessel in a weak acid solution, let it sit, and measure how much lead migrates into the liquid. Presence is not migration. The FDA notes that properly fired pottery binds essentially all of its lead into the glaze, so a glaze can light up an XRF reader and still leach an insignificant amount.

The distinction is routinely blurred. When advocate Tamara Rubin (Lead Safe Mama) XRF-tested a Crock-Pot brand ceramic liner, it read 42 ppm lead — and she noted it was “safe by all standards,” even while declining to recommend any ceramic insert as a matter of caution. An XRF reading taken on a cord, a heating element, or a housing says nothing about what leaches from the pot your food sits in. Presence in a part you never touch is not migration into dinner.

What the makers say is narrower than either camp. Crock-Pot’s support site says the glaze on its ceramic pots is a silicate of quartz, feldspar and clay fired into a glass film, that its slow cookers go through third-party testing against lead-content rules, and that every glaze it uses meets FDA lead and cadmium limits. Hamilton Beach’s FAQ says its specifications prohibit any measurable lead in the crock and that its ceramic suppliers are certified to FDA heavy-metal requirements. Neither publishes the lab numbers, so a statement is what you are trusting. That is a reasonable reason to prefer a material with nothing to attest, which is where bare stainless comes in.

Bare Steel and Unglazed Clay

If you want a lead-free slow cooker by material rather than by test certificate, the answer is an insert with no glaze and no coating: bare stainless steel, or unglazed clay. Nothing to leach, nothing to attest, and nothing to wear through.

Instant Pot Duo 6 Qt (stainless steel inner pot)

The most accessible answer is the multicooker many people already own. Instant Pot’s product page lists the Duo’s inner pot as 18/8 stainless steel with a tri-ply bottom, and every Duo includes a Slow Cook program. Nothing is glazed; there is no ceramic and no nonstick coating on the standard insert, so the lead conversation does not apply. The one thing to check: keep the stainless inner pot — some accessory pots sold separately are ceramic-coated nonstick. If your pot is bare metal, you already own a lead-free slow cooker. Maker price is $109.99 with a one-year limited warranty; Amazon had it at $89.99 on September 1, 2026.

360 Cookware 6 Quart Slow Cooker Set

If you want a purpose-built stainless slow cooker rather than a multicooker doing double duty, 360 Cookware’s product page lists a T-316 surgical-grade stainless stockpot at .110 gauge, handcrafted in West Bend, Wisconsin, that sears on the stovetop and then drops onto the included heating base to simmer. It replaces both the ceramic crock and the “brown the meat in a separate pan” step. At $479.95 it costs several times what a drugstore crock pot does, but it carries a lifetime warranty, and the heating base is sold on its own for $145.00, so the pot and the electronics are separate parts rather than one disposable unit.

VitaClay VM7900-8 (unglazed clay)

VitaClay is the option for people who want clay instead of steel. The maker’s product page describes the insert as natural, unglazed Zisha clay with no added nonstick glaze, lead, or aluminum touching food, tested by third-party laboratories to FDA, California Prop 65 and RoHS requirements, with a clay lid and a one-year limited warranty at $259.00 for the 4-quart model. Unlike the stoneware makers, VitaClay does publish its lab reports: an Anresco Laboratories leach test dated February 28, 2017 (AOAC 973.82) found no detectable lead, cadmium or arsenic (detection limit 0.01 ppm) in the VM7900/VF7700-series pot, and a December 2018 certificate of analysis for the VM7900-8 clay pot reports the same result, though both reports are now several years old. A glazed crock is not a mistake. It is the cheapest, most familiar slow cooker there is, and Crock-Pot and Hamilton Beach put a lead statement in writing where you can read it. The trade-off is that you are trusting a statement rather than a material, and that a chipped or crazed glaze turns a low-risk pot into one worth replacing.

Hamilton Beach 6 Qt Programmable (33762)

Hamilton Beach answers the question directly in its FAQ: company specifications prohibit any measurable amount of lead in its slow cookers and their components, including the earthenware crocks, and the factories that make those crocks are certified ceramic producers whose ware is deemed to satisfy FDA heavy-metal requirements. The 6-quart programmable model 33762 pairs that crock with a glass lid and a programmable timer for $62.99 direct from the maker, and its product page carries a parts link, which matters when a crock cracks and the base is still fine.

The coated middle: GreenPan and GreenLife

GreenPan’s slow cookers cook on a ceramic nonstick coating over a hard-anodized pot rather than on stoneware, and GreenPan’s product-safety page states its Thermolon coated cooking surface is made without lead, cadmium, PFAS, and a long list of other substances. That statement is why the Elite 14-in-1 ($299.99) sits in the table. The budget GreenLife Healthy 6-Quart ($54.99) is a sister brand: the greenpan.us listing says PFAS-free and nothing about lead or cadmium, but GreenLife’s own product page for the same 6-quart slow cooker and the pot’s care-and-use manual state its ceramic coating is free of PFAS, PFOA, lead, and cadmium, so the coating statement is the same kind GreenPan makes, without published lab data. The reason neither is the pick is longevity, not chemistry: a nonstick coating is a consumable layer that eventually scratches and dulls, while a bare stainless pot or an intact stoneware crock does not wear out. Buy the coated version if in-pot searing on a light pot is the feature you will use; buy steel if you want the appliance to outlast its warranty.

These three are widely sold, and leaving them out is not a health claim. The disqualifier in each case is that the maker’s page either names a coated cooking surface without saying what the coating is, or does not name the cooking surface at all, and none of the three makes a lead or cadmium statement. Keep It, Replace It, or Retire It

You do not have to throw out a working slow cooker to be reasonable about this. If yours is a modern, name-brand unit bought new in the last decade or so, it was made under the leach standards above and, if it is a Crock-Pot or Hamilton Beach, the maker’s statement above covers it. Keeping it is the lower-waste choice, and replacing an intact crock with a stainless one to feel safer is performance, not risk reduction.

Retire any insert with a crazed, chipped, or cracked glaze. That fine spiderweb of cracks is where a sealed glaze surface breaks down and where leaching becomes plausible — a damaged glaze is a different object from an intact one. Be extra cautious with acidic, all-day cooks in older units: tomato sauce, wine, citrus, and vinegar are the acidic loads that pull the most out of a glaze. The FDA-referenced leach test (ASTM C738, per FDA CPG Sec. 545.450) soaks the ware in 4% acetic acid — vinegar strength — for 24 hours at room temperature; an acidic recipe held hot for eight hours is your kitchen’s version of that stress test, and the FDA gives cups and mugs a stricter limit precisely because hot liquids increase leaching. If you are buying, buy once.
