Borosilicate glass and the soda-lime glass most “glass” food storage is made from are different materials with different thermal limits, not two names for the same thing. Borosilicate resists a fast temperature change because of the boron trioxide in its formula; soda-lime gets its everyday durability from a heat-treatment process called tempering, which does little for heat shock specifically. Checking which one is in a given container — and reading the lid material, not just the glass — is the real safety question, and it isn’t the same question as whether the glass leaches anything.

What “Borosilicate” Means
Borosilicate glass is ordinary silica glass with boron trioxide added to the formula, which lowers the glass’s coefficient of thermal expansion — how much it physically grows or shrinks as its temperature changes. Corning’s own published data sheet for its Pyrex 7740 borosilicate glass (on MatWeb, credited directly to Corning) lists a linear thermal expansion of 3.25 millionths per °C across 0–300°C. Soda-lime glass — behind most everyday glassware, and most of what a food storage box just calls “glass” — commonly runs roughly three times that rate. Less expansion means less internal stress, which is the mechanism behind borosilicate’s reputation for surviving a hot pan on a cold counter.
Soda-lime glass isn’t weak, and most of it isn’t left untreated. The “tempered glass” label on food storage means the glass went through a rapid-cooling heat treatment after forming, leaving the surface in compression and making it considerably harder to break from an impact — a drop, a knock against the counter. That’s a real, useful property. It isn’t the same property as resisting a sudden temperature change, and tempering doesn’t alter the glass’s expansion rate the way adding boron trioxide does.
Is Borosilicate Glass Safer Than Tempered Glass?
For the specific failure mode of a fast temperature change, the two materials aren’t equivalent. Consumer Reports tested this directly in 2010: soda-lime bakeware broke in ten out of ten trials when moved from a 450°F oven to a wet countertop, while the borosilicate samples in the same test held at that temperature and mostly failed only once the oven hit 500°F. That’s a breakage-resistance gap, not a toxicity one — once you’re talking about the plain glass body itself, rather than any decoration on it, there’s no leaching difference between a borosilicate container and a soda-lime one. “Safer” here means less likely to shatter under thermal stress, which matters, but it’s worth being precise about which risk it actually addresses.
The Pyrex Question
Pyrex is the brand most people picture when they think “borosilicate,” and that association is outdated for anyone buying in the US today. When Pyrex launched in 1915 it really was borosilicate — Consumer Reports traces the name back to heat-resistant railroad-lantern glass. Since then, US manufacturers of both Pyrex and Anchor Hocking switched their bakeware to soda-lime glass; Consumer Reports does not date the switch, and no maker states a year for it either, but the shift shows up in the current owner’s own materials — Instant Brands’ pyrexhome.com never uses the word “borosilicate” anywhere on its product, FAQ, or warranty pages, checked August 2026.
Is Pyrex Borosilicate Anymore?
Not in the US, as far as the maker states it. The split isn’t global, either: pyrex.co.uk, run separately by International Cookware under license and made in France, states outright that its “100% Glass” line is borosilicate glass. Same brand name, two different formulas, depending on which market sold it to you — which means the honest answer to “is my Pyrex borosilicate” depends on where you bought it, not on the name on the box.

Thermal Shock, in Practice
The material story explains why borosilicate glass exists, but almost no maker actually warranties the most extreme version of the temperature swing it’s built for. Every care page in the table below converges on the same instruction, regardless of which glass type the container uses: let it come to room temperature before you move it between extremes.
Can Borosilicate Glass Go From Freezer to Oven?
Physically, a low expansion rate is exactly what makes that kind of swing survivable, which is why laboratory glassware leans on borosilicate in the first place. Consumer warranties are more cautious than the physics alone would suggest. Anchor Hocking’s own care page instructs customers not to “take directly from freezer to pre-heated oven or microwave,” and Pyrex’s warranty page carries an equivalent instruction — “do not transfer directly from freezer to hot oven.” Even Simax, which states a working range of -40°C to +300°C, isn’t explicitly promising that exact jump. Treat any stated oven, freezer, or microwave rating as a ceiling for each condition on its own, not a promise the container can move directly between the two extremes.
Does the Glass Itself Leach Anything?
This is a different question from thermal shock, and the two get conflated often. Lead and cadmium do show up in warnings about glassware and ceramics, but the regulatory sources are specific about where that risk actually lives. FDA guidance on lead-glazed pottery describes lead entering food through “the glazes or decorations covering the surface” of a piece, not the clay or glass body underneath it. California’s Proposition 65 program is just as specific about glass: its cadmium fact sheet names “decorative paints used to make some glassware, pottery, and similar crafts” as the exposure route, not the clear glass itself.
That matters for food storage specifically, because almost none of it is decorated. A plain container — borosilicate or soda-lime, any brand below — isn’t the product either regulatory source describes; the concern applies to painted rims, glazed pottery, and decorative crafts, a separate category from clear glass jars and boxes. It also means an intact container already in your cabinet isn’t rendered unsafe by which base material it’s made from — replacing plain glass storage that still seals properly, purely to trade up to a “borosilicate” label, isn’t addressing a real exposure risk. It’s a decision about breakage tolerance and price, not toxicity.
Where the Plastic Lives
“Glass” food storage is rarely all glass. Every container in the comparison below pairs its glass body with a separate lid, and that lid is almost always where the plastic is. Polypropylene (PP) with a silicone gasket is the standard combination — Glasslock states this directly, and OXO’s Smart Seal line uses a removable silicone gasket in the same pattern. Duralex, Razab, and Snapware all use a colored plastic snap-lid instead, with the polymer itself usually left unnamed on the product page.
A small number of jar-style lines skip plastic entirely. Weck pairs its glass jars with a glass lid, a natural rubber gasket ring, and metal clamps; Le Parfait uses a hand-assembled metal closure with a rubber gasket that the company sells separately as a replacement part. That last detail is worth noticing on its own: a gasket you can buy and swap in is a container you can keep using once the original seal wears out, instead of retiring the whole piece.
What’s on the Market
Glass type, lid material, and heat limits vary enough by brand that the category name on a listing tells you almost nothing. Below is what each maker will commit to in writing about its own line, as of August 2026 — including the several that name no glass type at all, which is itself the answer to the question this page asks.

Razab and Simax name their glass as borosilicate and back it with a stated high-heat range. DuraLiving states “borosilicate glass” too, but its page stops there: no lid material, no country of manufacture, no real warranty beyond a 30-day return window — the word on the listing without any of the specifics that would let a buyer check it.
When It Breaks
Glass food storage eventually cracks, chips, or shatters, whichever material it’s made from, and what happens next is mostly about the container itself rather than any packaging it arrived in — these ship in a plain cardboard box that’s curbside-recyclable on its own, so the real question is what to do with the glass and the lid.
Can You Recycle Broken Glass Containers?
Generally, not with your bottles and jars. The Glass Packaging Institute’s industry FAQ states that “windows, ovenware, Pyrex, crystal and other products or tools are manufactured through a different process” than container glass, which is what curbside programs are built to handle. San Francisco’s municipal hauler, Recology groups “ceramic dishware or glassware” with mirrors and windows as unacceptable for recycling and compost alike — trash there, not the bin, regardless of glass type. Rules differ by hauler, so check yours, but assuming broken storage glass recycles with wine bottles is usually wrong. The plastic lid typically isn’t curbside-recyclable either, for a separate reason: most programs don’t take small, mixed-material caps and lids at all.
Buy Once
The clearest signal a maker gives about how long it expects its product to last isn’t marketing copy — it’s the warranty. The range in the table above is wide. Le Parfait states plainly its jars come with no guarantee at all, standard for a jar built for indefinite reuse with an inexpensive gasket swap. Snapware backs its glass-and-lid combination with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects; Simax offers a ten-year guarantee “of all functional properties.” Pyrex’s US warranty covers one failure mode — glass that “breaks from oven heat” — for two years. Caraway sits at the other end: its one-year warranty explicitly excludes “any glass or porcelain in the product,” the part most likely to break.
The buy-once case isn’t really about borosilicate versus soda-lime — it’s about which product a maker will stand behind, and for how long. A jar with a replaceable gasket and no warranty can outlast a warrantied set whose plastic lid isn’t sold separately, because the part that fails first is the part you can’t buy again.
